Some designers leave their mark on their epoch. Such is the case with Augusto Vignali, an artist whose graphic design and fashion work, with its enthusiasm, humor and curiosity, symbolises the spirit of the 70s and 80s. Art director and designer for Fiorucci, his style marked not only the world of fashion and branding, but also that of cruise ship through his long association with Costa. Born in Parma in 1949, Vignali began his career with a series of personal exhibitions of watercolors and gouaches. He returned to Milan, where his studio became a meeting point and a reference for young artists and graphic designers. Fascinated by the work of Jan Tschicold, and his ability to play with letters, as well as with the typography of Claude Garamond and Neville Brody, Vignali was also inspired by the great American illustrators of the early 20th century and by the design of the vernacular signs which we encounter in the streets and in everyday life.
