Exhibition: World War I in lithographs
The Nederlands Steendrukmuseum (Dutch Museum of Lithography) is presenting an exhibition about World War I in lithographs until 26 April 2015.
Never before was the poster so extensively used for war purposes as during World War I from 1914-1918. It developed in all the countries involved, to become the ultimate means of communication and “weapon”. Together with other related lithographs such as playing cards, art lithos and caricatures this exhibition shows an impressive selection of lithographic posters from Belgium, France, Germany, England, the Netherlands and the USA. They show an awesome picture of how the populations of those countries were summoned to take part in this war: to support the war in a material and moral sense and to influence the image of the war at home and in the colonies at the time.
Dutch cartoons and Belgian fugitives
The Netherlands declared themselves neutral. The government asked the media to be reserved in their reporting. Among others, De Nieuwe Amsterdammer, De Notenkraker and De Telegraaf ignored this appeal. Artists like Albert Hahn, Louis Raemakers, Jan Sluiters, Piet van der Hem and Willy Sluiter sharply exposed the war, its wrongs and cruelties. One million Belgian fugitives crossed the Dutch frontier; more than 100,000 remained till the end of the war. For these people but also for the needy population of Belgium and France that remained behind campaigns were held. Especially art manifestations of which the proceeds were used for their benefit. Artists such as Jan Toorop and Leo Gestel, but especially the artist Alfred Ost, fugitive from Belgium designed eye-catching posters for this purpose that are also included in this exhibition. Attention is also paid to the ‘deadly barbed wire’ that ran from Zeeuws Vlaanderen as far as beyond Aken along the Belgian-Dutch frontier.
